REST: Reviving Every Sacred Moment

As we approach the new year and a fresh season, I've been putting a lot of focus on REST.
For me, REST is Reviving Every Sacred Moment. Think about figures like Jesus, Gandhi, and Buddha—they showed us the power of REST. Jesus prayed away from the crowds, Gandhi meditated, and Buddha talked about balancing hustle and calm.
My life follows a simple hierarchy that guides everything. (I made this up, you can do the same)

It starts with Being of Service (this is my Faith), then Self, Family, Academics/Advocacy, making money, and social stuff.
I've created this triangle graphic (the more detailed version is at the bottom of this blog) and printed it as decor for my office as a reminder. Whenever I want to say yes to something, I check it against the hierarchy. For instance, I said no to a recent speaking opportunity on DEI in social media because it clashed with what matters most: academics, family time, and self-care. Prioritizing is my way of "doing it all" (but that’s another story for another time ;) )
Here's a less obvious example— time with my daughter. It was time to pick her up from daycare on a tough day where daggers were just being thrown at me all day! Normally, picking her up is one of the best parts of my day, but that day, I forgot about myself. So, I leaned on my support system and asked for some alone time. I needed a mental recharge because taking care of myself comes before taking care of my family. You know how they say, "You can't pour from an empty cup."
Before the winter school term kicks in, I made sure to schedule REST. Stepping away from work stuff, social media, and presentations allows me to dive into what I love—being creative, chilling out, family time, finding new experiences, and making memories.
I want you all to know that REST isn't some fancy luxury; it’s a must. It's about respecting yourself and your journey by giving yourself the space to recharge.
As we start this new year, I challenge you to make time for REST! Cheers to intentional rejuvenation and some well-deserved downtime.
